8th Grade Technology Class Description
Digital Media is a course designed to educate students on the ever-changing digital world. The curriculum covers a wide range of areas, so it appeals to a diverse group of students. Among the topics covered in Digital Media classes will be graphic design, animation, and web design.
In this class, students will recognize the basic tools used in image manipulation programs such as PhotoShop®. Students will use image processing techniques to resize and reshape, add layers, blend and paint, along with other methods to create dynamic images. There is a unit on video game creation where students will learn the basic principles of game architecture and theory. Students will develop a simple game with a protagonist and antagonist, in a world of their own design by designing sprites (characters) and tiles on a grid and developing maps using coordinates. Discussions will include the physical characteristics of motion such as gravity and drift.
Students will also learn to create basic Flash animation including learning how to use the Adobe Flash interface, importing images and creating new Flash files, drawing and formatting objects, tweening and more. Students will also get a basic introduction of creating a webpage from scratch using HTML (hypertext mark-up language). In doing so, students will learn vocabulary (tags) and the importance of syntax. Students will be encouraged to use the information they learn to personalize their webpages with color, music and videos. Finally, students will learn additional computer languages, and use their programming skills to program robots to engage in various activities.
