English Learners

  • English learners in Pleasant Valley receive a world-class education from dedicated and proficient teachers. The multitude of languages and cultures they bring to our school district enrich all of our students and staff. PVSD provides a variety of program options such as Structured English Immersion (SEI) and English Language Mainstream.

As part of the PVSD enrollment procedure, parents/guardians complete a home language survey that identifies students who may speak a language other than English.  Per California Education Code, the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California ) is administered to determine the student’s level of English. The ELPAC is also administered annually to previously identified English learners for the purpose of monitoring student progress.

For more information about language assessments and English learner identification, you may contact Debbie Maki, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at 805-389-2100.
